Our names are Christine Callagy and Ciara Ward, we are transition year students from Scoil Mhuire, Trim, Co.Meath. As part of our transition year programme we get the chance to part-take in work experience. Our choice of work experience was to spend a week in Country Choice as we share an interest in the catering industry.
We arrived in Nenagh on Sunday afternoon to a warm welcome from Mary,Peter and the three dogs Judy,Rufus and Molly. We started work bright and early on Monday morning. First we were shown around by Beata and Ann-Marie. We then learned how to make the tea and coffee using the machine, operate the till and how to package and weigh things such as Turkish Delight and Prunes.
We tasted many of the delicious foods Country Choice have to offer such as Cashel Blue Cheese, Chicken Liver pate, Ox Tongue, Sun-Dried asparagus,Evie Wards delicious dark chocolate brownies,Mary Wards marmalade,Gorgonzola italian mountain blue cheese,Wicklow mountain Brie,Minestrone soup and much more.
Our work included helping prepare the vegetables for lunch, pricing items sold in the shop, serving customers, clearing tables and making tea and coffee.
As we were in Country Choice for shrove Tuesday we gained a lot of pancake flipping skills" 1, 2, 3 Flip"!
We were making french style pancakes from homemade Country Choice batter with orange zest. We started to make the pancakes on Monday to ensure we would have our flipping skills perfected for frying pancakes on the street outside the shop on Tuesday, where we gave out tasters to people who passed by. We dressed our pancakes in organic maple syrup, lemon juice and sugar.
We took a trip to an organic farm in Birr to collect the organic vegetables which are used and sold in the shop. There was great excitement in the shop when the Reggiano Parmesan cheese made by Peter and Mary in Itay in August 2007 was cut.
We really enjoyed our experience working in the shop and we now realise it a time consuming job that requires dedication and hardwork.
