Our names are Ciara Ward and Christine Callagy. We are Transition Year students in Scoil Mhuire, Trim, Co.Meath. As part of our Transition Year programme we get the chance to part take in work experience. Our choice of work was to spend the week working in Country Choice, Nenagh, Co.Tipperary as we share an interest in the Catering industry.
We arrived in Nenagh on Sunday afternoon to a warm welcome from Peter and Mary Ward and their three dogs Rufus,Molly and Judy. On Monday morning we started work bright and early. We were shown around and given our uniforms by Beatia and Ann Marie. We got the opportunity to experience many different areas of the shop and delicatessen. We learned how to operate the coffee machine and use the till. we also got to taste some of the wonderful food country choice provide such as; homemade chicken liver pate, Sun-Dried asparagus,Cashel Blue Cheese, Evies dark chocolate brownies,Gorgonzola Italian Mountain blue cheese,Wicklow mountain brie,Marys Orange peel marmalade,Minestrone Soup with homemade brown bread, chutney and much more. We got the opportunity to serve people in the coffee shop and delicatessen, package, weigh and price items and prepare the vegetables for the lunch.
As we were in Country Choice for Shrove Tuesday we gained a lot of pancake flipping Skills " 1, 2, 3 flip!". We were making French style pancakes from homemade Country Choice batter with orange zest. We started to make pancakes on Monday to ensure we would have our flipping skills perfected for frying pancakes on the street outside the shop on Tuesday where we gave out tasters to the people who passed by and had successful street trade. We dressed our pancakes with organic maple syrup, lemon juice and sugar.
We took a trip to Birr with Peter to an organic farm to collect the organic vegetables which are used and sold in the shop.
There was great excitement in the shop when the Parmesan cheese made by Peter and Mary in Italy in August 2007 while doing the " Living the Dream programme " arrived into the shop and the first wheel was cut.
We really enjoyed our time working in the shop and we now realise that it is a very time consuming job which requires dedication and hard work. |
